Domain Hosting - Beginner Lesson

web hosting guide for beginners

We understand that this may be your first time needing web hosting services and it can be a little confusing. This article explains, in easy to understand terms, what domain web hosting services are and how it works. If you still have questions, please feel free contact us.

"Domain name" is the proper term for what you know as a "www" address (URL). You hear and see these addresses all of the time. "www.this.com" and "www.that.com". These are domain names. The domain name represents an IP address (4.27.289.6) and every computer on the Internet has one of these addresses. To explain this system a little better, we will tell you what happens when you visit a web site.

  1. You type in a domain name in your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) and hit enter or click a link on a web site.
  2. Your computer sends a message, through your phone lines or high speed lines, to your ISP (Road Runner, Earthlink, AOL, etc...) saying it wants to view this web site.
  3. Your ISP looks to see if this web site is on its own servers (computers at their location that handle things such as email and web hosting).
  4. If the site is stored there, it shows you the page. If it is not stored there, it sends you to one of several servers, on the web, that can tell what IP address is assigned as a host for this domain name. This computer then looks through its data base and finds out which other computer, on the web, is assigned this IP address and sends you there.
  5. When you finally arrive at the correct hosting server, it looks at the domain name you want to see and opens those files for you to look at.

This process is a lot more complicated and technical than this but it gives you a general idea. Just think, this only takes a second to happen and it is nothing short of a miracle that it actually even works!

Now that you have an idea how it happens, we will explain:

•  what you need
•  why you need it
•  how to get it and what it is.

After you have decided on what domain name you want, you must check to see if it is available. Inf-inet handles domain names registrations and transfers and you can purchase it from (renting actually because you have to pay for it annually or you will lose it). You can check if your domain name choice is available on this web site. If it is not available, you must think of another name (we can provide similar options). If it is available, you can then order it. If you call us, we will order it automatically for you.

You can stop here if you only want to reserve the name and not use it. You have purchased your domain name but there is nothing you can do with it. Think of buying the domain name kind of like buying a sign with your company's name on it. It doesn't do you much good without a building to hang it on.

Now you need web hosting (a building). You can either buy a web server and supply a full time, high speed Internet connection to it or rent one (pay for space on someone else's server). Most people choose to rent one. OK, you have a building (web hosting), you have your sign (domain name) on it.

Now what? Well, if people see your sign and come into your building, what will they see? Nothing! You forgot to put furniture (website design) in it! Now, you can build your own furniture (handle the design yourself) or get an interior decorator (web designer) to help you. Think very carefully on this. There are pros and cons to each choice. If you build your own furniture, you will save money, but unless you are a skilled furniture builder, the building will look tacky and uninviting. On the other hand, if you get an interior decorator to do it for you, it will have a very nice, professional look but it may be expensive. Also, remember this. Not all furniture builders are the same. You have cheap ones and expensive ones and you always get what you pay for. Decide upfront what kind of quality you need. If you are going to furnish your new building strictly on how cheap you can get it, what do you think it will look like when you are through?

We hope that this has helped explain some of this process. There are a lot of options and as you know, there is a price for everything. When it comes down to choosing some of the options that go along with these steps, get some advice from someone you can trust. A friend, family member or a co-worker. You can also speak with us about what options you may need. We have a knowledgeable experienced staff, and while you may not trust us as much as you do your brother, we do know everything about this subject and can be trusted. Our reputation speaks for itself.
